A
Brief History of Mount Sackville
|
Mount
Sackville was founded by Mother Callixte Pichet in 1864.Mother
Callixte was overwhelmed by the site and described it as
"Heaven on earth- in this world's language it does
not express the beauty of the place." The school
has evolved since 1864 from being a school which handled
a handful of students to a modern day school of over six
hundred students.In 1850 Blessed Anne-Marie Javouhey wrote
the following." We have been
asked to go to Ireland,to teach the poor and the well -to-do.
I have been assured that we could do much good there. If
such be the will of God,I agree to this foundation with
all my heart."The French nuns,of whom Sister
Callixte Pichet was leader, arrived in Ireland on the 12th.
December 1860.In an old Carmelite Monastery in Blanchardstown
the
three sisters took up residence.

Mount
Sackville became the property of the Sisters of Saint Joseph
of Cluny in January 1864 for the sum of 70,000 francs,€10,000.The
school has preserved and enhanced a strong tradition in Art,Music
and languages and Anne-Marie Javouhey's dictum to 'love the
children and to make a great effort to improve the education
and raise it to as high a degree of perfection as possible'
has had a central place in the philosophy of Mount Sackville.
